The idea of ‘pocket TVs’ has been floating around the market since the last century. But only the rapid and successful development of semiconductors made it a reality. The ability to replace large lamps with LEDs in projectors ushered in an era of miniaturization. Within a few years, ultra-compact pico and pocket models flooded the market. Unfortunately, poor image quality due to limited brightness, contrast, resolution and color gamut became an insurmountable barrier to further growth in their popularity.
But progress does not stand still. Over the past 10 years, the semiconductor industry has made significant strides. In turn, the improved element base allowed the developers to dramatically improve image quality in minimal dimensions.
This year, Unihertz from Heavenly Empire introduced Unihertz 8849 Tank X and Tank 5 rugged phone-projectors.
Specs of their built-in projectors boast specs that significantly exceed their predecessors. They offer brightness up to 220 lumens, Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) resolution, ±40° keystone correction, and laser auto-focus of 0.5-3.0 meters. Moreover, the smartphone’s 17,600mAh battery eliminates the problem of power consumption in projector mode. At the same time, the built-in projector only adds about $ 100 to the phone price. Of course, its image quality is unlikely to allow the owner to fully enjoy the colorful landscapes of the Serengeti or the underwater world. But the projector is quite suitable for watching baseball or football in the dark on a 60″-80″ screen with friends and a beer in the backyard.
Mini projectors
However, companies also offer a wide range of mini Full HD models with higher specs. The list of the most popular models, for example, includes:

Last year’s XGIMI Vibe One fits perfectly between the built-in pico projector of the TANK 5 and TANK X Phone and the more expensive and brighter freestanding mini models.
XGIMI Vibe One
The model features a traditional cylinder design on a rotating stand.
The dimensions and weight are (31 x 12 x 14 cm) / (12.08 x 5.33 x 4.53 inches)@1.4 kg / 3.1 lbs, which fully meets the portability criterion. The Vibe One is available in Cloud Ash or Blue colors.
It comes with officially licensed Netflix and Google TV with access to popular streaming apps including Prime Video, YouTube, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, Spotify, and many others.
Google Assistant can search for apps in the App Store or streaming apps. Google Cast provides screen mirroring. However, Mac owners are limited to Google Chrome due to the lack of AirPlay support.
Unfortunately, MEMC (frame interpolation smooth playback) is missing for sports fans.
The model has dual 3W speakers by JBL and offers Movie and Music sound modes. A downward-firing speaker activates Bluetooth Speaker Mode. The battery provides up to 1.2 hours in ECO Mode for video, and up to four hours for music.
A little over 25 ms input lag in 1080p@60 Hz is quite suitable for casual gaming. The Vibe One has one HDMI input, one USB Type-A port, and DC power. The Vibe One comes with a sticker set.
The measured brightnes practically corresponds to the specs and is:
– Performance Mode (highest brightness) ~230 lumens;
– Standard Mode (balanced brightness and color accuracy) ~190 lumens;
– Eco Mode (to save battery life) ~65 lumens.
It’s best suited for fully darkened rooms or for use outdoors at night.
The list of color modes includes Standard, Movie, Game, and User. Full CMS with a color tuner, 12-point white balance correction, and gamma settings provide calibration.

The Tank 5 Phone offers virtually unlimited battery life thanks to its monstrous 17,600 mAh battery capacity. DisplayPort provides input/output.
Objectively, the hybrid Tank 5 projector is half the price and has slightly better specs. On the other hand, carrying a smartphone weighing over 700 grams around the city is hardly convenient. Sure, it might be useful for fending off bandits in a dark alley. But as a phone, it’s a bit heavy.

The XGIMI Vibe One may usher in a new era of competition between pocket-sized mini projectors and built-in pico projectors in smartphones. In fact, the Vibe One and projector of the Tank 5 have identical specs. The Tank 5 is superior in price, size, and significantly superior in battery capacity. To be fair, the rugged smartphone’s weight and size aren’t ideal for everyday use in the city. It’s designed for tourists, and its superb battery is designed, among other things, for long-lasting lighting with a powerful built-in flashlight. While the phone’s primary function remains, it doesn’t detract from the benefits of its ultra-powerful battery. The Vibe One offers more extensive Smart functionality (Google TV and licensed Netflix) and significantly more customization options.
Comparing their price-quality ratios is unlikely to be accurate due to their different design and functionality. But both models are great in their class and worthy of consumer attention.
