Jura E8 ED vs Jura E8 EC coffee machines Review

The iconic Jura brand belongs to the Swiss company Elektroapparate AG, which has been developing, manufacturing, and selling premium home appliances for nearly 100 years. Automatic coffee machines have been its core business since 1971.

Jura coffee machines are manufactured in Switzerland by Eugster/Frismag, which, like Saeco, is a leading global manufacturer of coffee machines. In fact, these companies are OEM suppliers (original equipment manufacturers) for various brands, including Bosch, Melitta, Nivona, and others.

For simplicity, the company uses identical names with different letter indexes for different generations of the same series. The Jura E8 is rightfully positioned as one of the most successful series due to its superb price-quality ratio. Therefore, new Jura E8 ED in October 2025 caused a bit of a stir among experts. The series offers a few colors, including:

– Midnight Silver (15712, instead of Platinum) – a black coffee machine with a matte silver front panel;

– Cosmic Black (15749) – a black model with a front panel with a slight blue tint in a ‘night sky’ style;

– traditional Piano Black/White – an all black or white models with a glossy front panel.

The series platforms are almost identical and include:

– 3.5″ LED TFT display;

– P.A.G.2 grinder with 7 grinding settings;

– 8th gen (3D) brewing unit with an adjustable capacity of 5-16 g;

– Extra Shot for milk drinks;

– Fine Foam Frother G3 milk system;

– 1.9 L water tank;

– Control via Smart Connect app or Wi-Fi Connect (optional).

Of course, two new drink preparation technologies called Light Brew and Sweet Foam are the main innovations of the new series.

Jura E8 EC (2023) vs E8 ED (2025)

Classic hot brew modes offer 12 basic drinks, including two programs for traditional Americano and Cappuccino with the classic ‘coffee and milk on top’ sequence. In addition to two new Light Brew and Sweet Foam brewing technologies, this series offers:

– more elegant body;

– the new Light Brew mode for seven programs produces black coffee and five milk variations with reduced extraction at a lower brewing temperature. As a result, for example, espresso at a temperature of 45-50°C in the cup is ideal for lovers of very light milk-based coffee drinks;

– the new Sweet Foam mode (foaming milk with syrup) is supported by all coffee milk-based programs.

– like the E8 EB series before 2020, the updated series uses a ground coffee sensor, eliminating the need to select this mode. To prepare it, coffee lovers simply open the chute and add up to two measuring spoons of ground coffee;

– statistics on prepared drinks and service. A similar option in previous models is available via a service key combination;

– Quality Improvement Assistant displays maintenance tips on the screen (Maintenance & Care Optimization, etc.) and is activated in the settings;

– the improved shape of the container for rinsing the milk system ensures a tighter fit to the cappuccino maker spout, eliminating splashes;

– the company has removed the Extra Shot mode for milk drinks. Essentially, the coffee machine in this mode adds an extra shot of espresso (usually 25–30 ml) to the standard recipe, enhancing the coffee component. This is convenient, for example, for those who like large portions of a strong enough latte.

Design

At first glance, the ED design is identical to the previous EC series. But appearances are deceiving. The updated version feels smaller and more elegant.

The new case is 1 cm narrower, and its side panels taper towards the rear, where the width has been reduced to 25.5 cm. The height is also half a centimeter shorter. The top center has also changed. The series uses three ventilation slots instead of two. The bean compartment lid has been is now flush. The front panel has lost the recess behind the main dispenser, creating a smooth, rounded front. Finally, the company has removed the edges around the display module. As a result, the developers have achieved a visually more compact and elegant design with minimal reductions in overall dimensions.

The internal layout of the coffee machine has also been updated. Specifically, the developers repositioned the flowmeter (water flow sensor or flow meter), the Sysko water pump with a maximum pressure of 15 bar and a pulsation damper at the outlet, and the multi-valve. The routing of some wires and tubes, the brewing unit lid, and the shape of the grounds container and drip tray have also been modified. Specifically, the grounds container no longer has a rubber backing, improving the reliability and making it easier to clean. The discard container still holds pulp for 16 shots, and water tank holds 1.9 liters.

The ribbed side wall of the water tank has been improved. New model provides better visibility of the water level. Finally, the cup holder grid has also been redesigned. Overall, the design of the updated series features significantly fewer straight lines and sharp angles, giving the coffee machines a more elegant appearance.

Display and other

The control panel remains unchanged from the E8. It contains six side context keys, a grinder control located behind a hinged lid, and an on/off button on the top panel at the rear. The opening sensor for the ground coffee bypass chute behind the grinder control lid is an only difference. Thanks to this, the coffee machine no longer requires activating the ‘ground coffee’ mode before adding ground coffee to the chute (bypass).

The screen contains icons for four drinks, allowing quick launch with a single press of the side buttons. The panel also contains two lower utility keys for switching brewing modes, entering the menu, and scrolling through homescreens with recipes.

The program settings menu is selected by holding the key for a few seconds.

All other specs, technical solutions, and features remain the same, including:

– the Aroma Grinder 2 professional coffee grinder.

It makes a few turns back after each grind preventing the risk of breakage due to stuck bean fragments. This allows for adjustment at any time. Grind adjustments in other models are only possible during operation. Furthermore, its automatic return to the starting position reduces heat and ensures a consistent grind size;

– non-removable built-in screw-type brewing unit;

– automatic milk frother ensures superb milk frothing;

– rare preheating function with drainage for dispensing the first coffee at the correct temp immediately after switching on;

– a drip tray full sensor instead of a traditional float reliably prevents water from overflowing;

– 1450-watt flow-through heater;

– a dual coffee dispenser with cup illumination and a separate water nozzle in the center, which accommodates glasses up to 111 mm high. A separate dispenser on the right is designed for a height of up to 153 mm high.

Hot Brew

Jura programs

– Espresso (with P.E.P. / intermittent pump technology for longer extraction and richer flavour) – default 45 ml / 15-80 ml setting;

– Coffee (similar to Lungo; without P.E.P.) – 100 ml / 25-240 ml;

– Americano (classic – espresso + hot water; without P.E.P.) – 60 ml espresso + 40 ml hot water / 25-240 ml coffee, 0-240 ml water;

– Lungo – 120 ml coffee + 100 ml with Americano settings;

– Doppio (double espresso) – two consecutive espressos;

– Cappuccino (milk foam + coffee) – 20 seconds of milk foam (1 sec ~ 8-10 ml) + 60 ml of coffee without P.E.P. / foam up to 45 sec (up to 400 ml) + coffee 25 – 240 ml;

– Latte Macchiato (cappuccino with pause between the milk foam and coffee) – 33 seconds of foam + 20-second pause + 45 ml of coffee without P.E.P. / milk foam up to 45 seconds (~400 ml), pause up to 60 seconds, coffee from 25 to 240 ml;

– Flat White (coffee without P.E.P. + milk foam) – 60 ml coffee + 18 seconds of foam (~150 ml) / 25-240 ml coffee + 1-45 seconds of foam;

– Espresso Macchiato (little milk foam + espresso with P.E.P.) – 4 seconds of foam + 25 ml of espresso / foam 1-45 seconds + espresso 15-80 ml;

– Cortado (‘inverted’ espresso macchiato – espresso with P.E.P. + little milk foam) – 25 ml espresso + 4 seconds of milk foam / 15-80 ml espresso + 1-45 seconds of foam. This proportional increase in ingredients can be positioned as a second classic cappuccino recipe based on a richer espresso with P.E.P.;

– Milk foam – 15 sec / 1-45 sec;

– Water – 220 ml / 25-300 ml.

Light Brew

Of course, Light Brew and Sweet Foam are the main Jura E8 ED’s innovations.

Jura E8 ED Brewing technologies
Jura E8 ED Brewing technologies

The Light Brew can be positioned as a reduced extraction mode, which involves brewing a slightly smaller amount of ground coffee per serving at a lower water temperature. However, the brewing time and pressure remain unchanged.

In testing, the difference between the brewing parameters for a classic Hot Brew espresso and Light Brew espresso for a 40 ml cup is 70°C@12.5 g vs 50-55°C@11 g. As a result, warm Light Brew has a softer, more neutral flavor, which will certainly find its fans.

This mode is currently available for Espresso, Coffee, Cappuccino, Latte Macchiato, Flat White, Cortado, and Espresso Macchiato.

The Light Brew option is not yet available for Americano, Lungo, and Double Espresso. The milk component has not changed. Therefore, the overall temperature reduction is less than that of the coffee component. For example, for a 200 ml Cappuccino, it’s 58°C vs 64°C for the Hot Brew option. In turn, the lower intensity of the coffee component makes the drink more delicate. In fact, this mode enhances the milk component.

To be fair, a similar effect can be achieved by reducing the strength and temperature in the settings. However, the lack of user profiles complicates the process.

Switching between drinks in Light Brew mode requires just two presses, including the lower-left button (to access the mode submenu) and selecting Light Brew. As a result, the coffee machine can brew up to seven drinks in a reduced extraction mode. Therefore, this mode is especially convenient for multi-user use, but less usefulfor for one coffee lover.

Unfortunately, there are no settings for Light Brew drinks. The coffee machine only offers preset coffee strength, temperature, and coffee/milk volume/ratio settings.

Sweet Foam

Sweet Foam is the second new mode in the E8 series. The company previously used it in the Jura S8 series. It’s designed for preparing milk-based coffee drinks with syrup.

Jura E8 ED syrup cartridge
Jura E8 ED syrup cartridge

In fact, the coffee machine froths milk and evenly mixes it with the syrup, creating a smooth milk foam with a fruity flavor. Of course, sweet coffee lovers can add it to their cup and stir it manually. But the machine will do it more evenly. Furthermore, maximum automation is the primary purpose of the coffee machine. However, many coffee lovers still prefer a Turkish coffee pot, which allows them to relax during the magical brewing process of this legendary drink.

Sweet Foam offers a separate program set, which is accessed via a submenu on the display by pressing the lower left button. However, this option is redundant, as the Sweet Foam option actually includes an using the syrup attachment, which evenly mixes frothed milk with it. Therefore, when starting any Sweet Foam program, the coffee machine requires replacing the regular foam attachment with the syrup attachment.

Alternatively, the user can change the attachment and run a similar classic recipe or its light version without switching to Sweet Foam. This program set is similar and would be more useful if it allowed for programmable parameters, including strength, volume, temp, and coffee/grinder ratio.

Unfortunately, as with Light Brew mode, the coffee machine only offers settings for the classic version.

During testing, the syrup blender demonstrated very even mixing, distributing the syrup flavor throughout the entire drink, including the foam. Its amount influences the intensity of flavoring.

In addition to adding coconut, almond, caramel, and other flavors to milk-based coffee drinks, it supports the preparation of delicious milkshakes without coffee.

Conclusions

The Swiss company once again successfully confirmed its status as an industry innovation leader by introducing a superb upgrade to the phenomenally popular E8 series. The new Jura E8 ED (2025 / 5th gen) costs approximately € 1,100 – € 1,300. The price of its predecessor, the E8 EC (2023 / 4th gen), ranges from € 950 – € 1,100. For a few hundred the new ED series offers two new Light Brew and Sweet Foam modes, ten additional programs, and several improvements, including new Midnight Silver and Cosmic Black colors.

Light Brew is ideal for mild and not very hot milk-based drinks. Children will probably like milk desserts with syrup in Sweet Foam mode.

Unfortunately, the Cold Extraction process is still unavailable. As known, it was invented by Dutch merchants who were deprived of hot water while sailing. Long brewing over 12 hours and a very coarse grind ensured acceptable extraction even with cold water. This technology is implemented in m odern premium Jura and Delonghi models. In particular, Jura has increased extraction efficiency with a special water injection system, precise pressure regulation, and a volumetric lower piston surface, offering coffee lovers a real Cold Extraction. But the updated series only offers modes with ice addition.

The previous E8 EB model is significantly cheaper than the E8 EC/ED, but offers a less productive grinder, milk system, brewing unit and display. The platform of the latest modifications is almost identical, but the new modes are sufficient compensation for several hundred. Thus, the E8 ED remains one of Jura’s most optimal series with a superb price-quality ratio.
