The iconic Jura brand belongs to the Swiss Elektroapparate AG, which has been producing premium espresso coffee machines since the early 90s of the last century.
Today its lineup includes several series, including the premium Giga. In addition, the company produces the Professional models, designed for use in offices, caterers, self-service zones and coffee shops. Their productivity varies from 50 to several hundred cups per day.
Jura Professional
They are a little more expensive than ‘home’ models. But with the exception of increased capacity and connection to the water supply, some ‘home’ premium models also have two boilers, two grinders or two hoppers, of course, increasing their price. As known, two thermoblocks speed up the preparation of milk-based drinks and improve thermal stability. Two grinders and two hoppers ensure the simultaneous use of two different coffee blends. For example, it can use medium roast Arabica for black coffee, and dark roast Arabica or a blend with Robusta for milk-based programs.
In fact, Professional Jura models can be positioned as more universal coffee machines suitable for use anywhere.
Unlike its competitors, they use the Jura’s built-in non-removable screw brewing unit with a capacity of up to 16 grams of ground coffee per serving. The non-removable design does not require daily rinsing under running water and is a significant bonus for intensive use.
The Jura’s main innovative list includes:
– P.E.P. – pulse pumping of water through the coffee tablet increases the efficiency of extraction.
– Cold Extraction Process – cold brewing the black coffee by increasing the contact area of water with the coffee tablet and the complex configuration of water nozzles;
– reverse grinder – grinding adjustment at any time.
In fact, before stopping, it makes a half turn back. As known, adjusting conventional coffee grinders is only possible when rotation due to the risk of damaging the millstones by unmilled grain fragments.
Professional line 2025:
– Giga W10, Giga X8 / X8c and Giga X3 / X3c;
– X10 / X10c and X4 / X4c;
– W8, W4, WE6 and WE8.
The letter ‘c’ in the article number means that it can be connected to a water supply.
Jura X10 platform
This is a classic super-automatic model for commercial use in the HoReCa segment (HoReCa – Hotel / Restaurant / Catering or Cafe).
Platform:
– non-removable screw brewing unit with a capacity of up to 16 grams;
– 15 bar pump;
– 1450W flow-through thermal block;
– two multivalves for distributing water and steam flows;
– innovative steel conical P.A.G.2+ coffee grinder with grinding adjustment at any time;
– max cup height – 150 mm;
– 5-liter water container, 500-gram bean hopper with optional capacity expansion to 1 kg, 1.5-liter drip tray and 40-cup coffee grounds compartment.
The company recommends making up to 100 servings per day, but the coffee machine easily makes 200 or even more.
A small modification with optional Jura accessories automates the draining into the sewer and the dumping of the pulp into a container under the counter.
The X10 comes with a hex key for the bean hopper and water container. Considering the easy access of different people, the lock seems a useful precaution.
The dispenser has two outlets for coffee, two outlets for milk, a separate nozzle for hot water and LED lighting.
Controls include a 3.5-inch non-touch display, 6 context keys around the display, and an on/off button on the top surface.
The program is selected by long pressing the button opposite the selected drink. General settings use a hidden menu, which is opened by long pressing the lower right key. It allows the owner to hide some recipes from the main screen. In general, the display shows 12 icons on three desktops, which are switched in a carousel by the lower right key.
In addition to the general portion counter, the coffee machine has a ‘daily’ counter, which can be reset.
Jura X10 Key Features
Unlike the Giga models, the X10 has only one flow-through thermal block, which slightly increases the preparation time for milk-based drinks. In particular, preparing two cappuccinos takes ~ 1 min 50 sec. The bean hopper and coffee grinder are also not duplicated, which limits the simultaneous use of two different coffee mixtures. But the model can prepare any two drinks at the same time.
The X10 platform is similar to the Giga and includes a 5-liter water tank, 1.5-liter drip tray, and a 40-serving pulp container. But its bean hopper holds only 500 grams. However, the company offers an optional capacity expander that increases its capacity to 1 kg. In fact, the X10 occupies an intermediate position between the premium Giga and budget-friendly models.
Like the Giga 10, the X10 supports 35 programs taking into account the various brewing and dispensing modes.
This list includes 12 classic single programs ‘one-touch’. They are selected using three desktops, which are switched in a carousel by the lower right key. In addition, the coffee machine prepares 9 Cold Brew recipes with Cold Extraction Process, 3 drinks with the Extra shot function and 11 ‘double’ drinks.
But in fact, the list of single programs includes only 9 recipes and the traditional hot water / milk / milk foam:
– Water – 220 ml default / 25 – 300 ml settings;
– Milk – 20 sec milk (~ 160 ml) / up to 45 sec milk and up to 45 sec foam;
– Milk foam – 10 sec milk foam (~ 100 ml) / up to 45 sec milk and up to 45 sec foam.
Cappuccino maker
The cappuccino maker has settings for adding milk and milk foam separately to coffee. As known, Jura traditionally regulates the amount using the supply duration, which is set in seconds (1 second ~ 8 ml of milk or 10 ml of milk foam). Separate milk/foam settings are available for almost all programs. In addition, the coffee machine offers a foaming temperature setting (low, medium and high), which corresponds to 46°C, 48°C and 50°C. But the optimal foam texture is achieved at a milk temperature in the range of 55-65°C, which does not fit into the proposed settings. However, the final drink temp when using uncooled ultra-pasteurized milk from a tetra pack reaches 60-65°C, which corresponds to the preferences of the majority.
Milk frother prepares superb fine homogeneous foam with a sweetish taste. After 15 minutes of passive mode, the coffee machine automatically rinses the milk tract without the milk hose, which is always dipped in milk. But, of course, it should also be rinsed at the end of the working day together with the full cleaning cycle of milk frother. Otherwise, the system will be contaminated with milk protein, which has an unpleasant smell and taste. However, the full cleaning process is almost completely automated, and special cleaning agents ensure impeccable quality. In addition, the model comes with baths that greatly simplify this process.
Single programs
– Espresso (with P.E.P. technology) – 45 ml by default / 15 – 80 ml setting. For reference, when preparing black coffee ~ 5 ml remains in the coffee tablet;
– Coffee (without P.E.P.) – 100 ml / 25 – 240 ml;
– Americano (espresso + water, without P.E.P.) – 70 ml espresso + 50 ml water / 25 – 240 ml coffee + 0 – 240 ml water;
– Lungo – 120 coffee + 100 water / 25 – 240 ml coffee + 0 – 240 ml water;
– Cappuccino (milk foam + coffee) – 14 seconds of milk foam (1 sec ~ 8 – 10 ml) + 60 ml coffee without P.E.P. / foam up to 45 sec (~ 450 ml) + 25 – 240 ml coffee;
– Coffee with milk – 90 ml coffee + 7 sec milk + 3 sec milk foam / 25 – 240 ml coffee + milk and foam up to 45 sec each component;
– Flat White (classic cappuccino – coffee without P.E.P. + milk + milk foam) – 60 ml coffee + 14 sec milk + 2 sec milk foam / 25 – 240 ml coffee + milk components up to 45 sec each component;
– Cortado (espresso with P.E.P. + milk components) – 25 ml espresso + 2 sec milk + 1 sec milk foam / 15-80 ml espresso + milk components up to 45 sec each;
– Latte Macchiato – milk 4 sec + foam 22 sec + 20 sec pause + 45 ml coffee without P.E.P. / milk components up to 45 sec each (up to 800 ml in total), 0 – 60 sec pause + 25 – 240 ml coffee.
The last three programs differ only in volume.
Cold Brew and Extra shot
Cold Brew programs are activated via the modifier with lower left key or configured for each drink. In this mode, coffee temp is slightly higher than the water temp in the tank. The cycle duration is increased by about 2 times due to the pump operating in a special intermittent mode with lower pressure and water flow rate through the coffee tablet. The company calls it ‘3D brewing technology’, and positions this brewing unit as the ‘8th gen’.
The technology idea is simple and elegant. The convex surface of the lower piston with a volumetric 3D relief and a new system of water injection into the coffee tablet provide an analogue of a 3D shower. Its water jets under pressure penetrate the coffee tablet from all sides.
The intense interaction of water and ground coffee accelerates the caffeine extraction, providing traditional coffee strength even at cold water.
For reference, this method was invented by Dutch merchants who experienced a huge shortage of hot water during the voyage. But it requires a very coarse grind. Therefore, Jura blocks the Cold Brew modifier when setting the coffee grinder less than 4. At grinding (1-3), the screen does not even display icons for activating Cold Brew.
Cappuccino, Latte Macchiato and Flat White with Extra shot function are also activated via a modifier, which is turned on by the lower left key. It makes the coffee component in two cycles (two grinds and two pours in equal parts). That is, Flat White with a preset 60 ml of coffee in the Extra shot mode will be prepared by the coffee machine as two espressos of 30 ml + milk component. In fact, this mode increases the volume without reducing the coffee strength.
Conclusions
The new X10/X10c has become a cheaper version of the Giga 10W. It is equipped with one flow-through thermal block, one grinder and one hopper for beans. Similar components of Giga 10 are duplicated. Accordingly, it prepares milk-based drinks faster, using the second thermal block to generate steam for frothing milk, and can simultaneously use two different coffee blends. In addition, the second components perform the reserve function in case of failure. But the price difference of almost $ 1,000 (~ $ 4,000 vs $ 4,830) is quite adequate compensation for these minor inconveniences.
The supported technologies, including P.E.P., Cold Extraction Process and reverse grinder, and superb choice of 35 programs are identical. They will satisfy the most exotic tastes of even a large number of coffee lovers, which is important for commercial models.
Perhaps their performance is excessive for everyday home use, but it can be relevant for a crowded party. However, given the small price difference, Professional Jura models can be positioned as a little more expensive universal premium coffee machines suitable for use anywhere.
