Last fall XGIMI introduced another model of the popular MoGo series. The company positions them as outdoor camping movie projectors. They are compact, lightweight and relatively inexpensive. Unlike previous models, the new MoGo 3 Pro has a built-in adjustable stand.
For reference, XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro has been awarded by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA).
Increasing the resolution from HD 720p to Full HD 1080p was the main and only improvement of MoGo 2 Pro (April 2023) vs MoGo 2 (May 2023). Other specs are identical:
– 400 ISO Lumens brightness (accordance with ISO 21118 standard);
– Android TV 11.0;
– Full HD 3D support;
– 2x 8W internal speakers;
– price ~ $ 280 – $ 300;
– optional 120° adjustable stand (sold separately, ~ $ 70 – $ 100).
The list of improvements in MoGo 3 Pro is longer. In addition to the built-in stand, the new model offers:
– 450 ISO Lumens brightness;
– dual 5W Harman Kardon Speakers;
– Google TV with licensed Netflix;
– Ambient Light Mode (creates screen background);
– optional Creative Optical Filter (sold separately, ~ $ 60).
The filter is designed for XGIMI Wall function. It creates a background image on the ceiling or wall. Physically, the Creative Optical Filter reduces the throw ratio from 1.20:1 to ~ 0.5:1, increasing the screen area by about 5 times at the same projection distance.
But MoGo 3 Pro is significantly more expensive (~ $ 450) and does not support 3D mode. All models weigh 1.1 kg / 2.4 lbs and form an image of 100″@2.7m / 8.86 ft with a Throw Ratio of 1.20:1.
XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro
The XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro uses a 0.23-inch DMD DLP chip and LED light engine with a color gamut of ~ 90% for the DCI-P3 standard. Given its relatively low brightness, acceptable image quality is available for a 120″-130″ image. However, the company specifies a max size of 200″. But increasing the size makes the colors duller and more faded. Therefore, 200″ is more correctly positioned only as the focusing range.
The projector does not have a built-in battery. But the company offers an optional PowerBase stand, which combines the functions of a tripod and a power bank with a capacity of 20,000 mAh (~ 2.5 hours of continuous playback time).
It’s sold separately and costs ~$ 130. Of course, stand radically increases the model mobility.
Model supports HDR10, ISA 2.0 uninterrupted Auto Keystone correction, ISA 2.0 Auto Focus, Intelligent Screen Alignment and Intelligent Obstacle Avoidance.
This projector has a fixed focal length without manual zoom. Accordingly, the image size is adjusted by the distance to the screen. However, digital zoom does provide a bit of customization.
The XGIMI Wall feature creates the nice scenes for relaxation, for example, a starry night or an underwater environment. But it requires the XGIMI Wall app from the Google Play Store.
DLNA/Google Cast provides screen mirroring.
Latency in Game Mode is ≤ 27ms / ≤ 60ms for 1080p@60Hz with AK off / on.
Picture modes
The XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro has four picture modes, including Standard, Office, Game and User. In addition, the projector uses three power modes. Unfortunately, the brightest Performance mode traditionally has a green bias. However, the less bright Standard provides good color accuracy.
The Color Management System (CMS) is superb. The traditional settings of brightness, contrast, saturation, and sharpness are available in the main menu for each picture mode. Advanced settings contain the color temperature, including Cool, Standard (by default), Warm, or User. The Color Temperature submenu offers the gain for red, green and blue.
Additional customization is realized through Advanced Settings for DNR, MPEG NR, local contrast control, DI Film Mode, gamma, and via the color tuner or 11-point white balance correction. The submenu in the color tuner provides adjusting the saturation, brightness, offset, and gain, while the 11-point white balance correction is designed for setting the gain of red, green and blue.
To be fair, most users are unlikely to use all these features. But perfectionists can have a lot of fun achieving the ideal image.
The Standard and Eco modes demonstrate good color accuracy. The measured brightness in Standard is about 330 lumens.
The power mode selection is accessible via the Settings menu, which is opened by pressing the little gear symbol at the top right of the screen. Using the Display & Sound submenu and the Picture and Brightness mode shortcut, the user gets access to this setting. Frankly, the access feels unnecessarily hidden.
The brightness in User and Office modes drops to 260 lumens. But Office mode is significantly ‘warmer’ and reproduces red tones well. As in Standard, the brightness of Game mode reaches 330 lumens. Given the brightness, Standard or Game modes are more optimal for daytime viewing with diffused daylight.
Conclusion
Pros
– good price;
– Google TV OS featuring Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Max, etc;
– high ‘out-of-the-box’ color accuracy;
– dual 5W Harman Kardon speakers.
Cons
– input lag only for casual games;
– auto-focus feature is not ideal.
The measured brightness of the model varies from 160 ANSI lumens in Office / Eco mode, to 400 ANSI lumens for User / Performansce mode. In principle, it’s sufficient for acceptable image quality of up to 120 inches diagonally and without ambient light. However, fans of bright, saturated colors can reduce the projection size, for example, to 80 inches.
Of course, the compact 1080p LED projector segment under $1,000 is crowded. But the good price-quality ratio promises MoGo 3 Pro quite cloudless marketing prospects.
For example, the main competitor Anker Nebula Mars 3 Air (portable 1080p projector with an LED light engine, Google TV with Netflix) is more expensive ($ 600 vs $ 450) and less bright (400 vs 450 ISO Lumens). In fairness, it has a built-in battery that lasts 2.5 hours, but cannot boast Harman Kardon speakers.
Popular Samsung Freestyle 2nd Gen offers only 230 ANSI Lumens and costs $800. The bright and ultra-compact Dangbei Atom provides 1,200 ISO Lumens, but its price reaches $ 900. Anker Nebula Capsule 3 LED and Capsule 3 Laser offer only 200 and 300 ANSI Lumens at $ 500 and $ 750, respectively.
The MoGo 3 Pro fits neatly between the new XGIMI Elfin Flip (400 ISO Lumens, $280) and the legendary XGIMI Halo+ (900 ANSI Lumens, $800).
