Famous Jura brand belongs to Swiss Elektroapparate AG and is a cult in the industry. This company develops and produces premium home appliances since 1931. In the early 90s of the last century, it focused on the development and production of premium coffee machines.
Today Jura coffee machines are manufactured by Swiss Eugster/Frismag company. Like Saeco, it’s the world’s leading manufacturer of fully automatic coffee machines. Besides Yura, Eugster/Frismag is OEM (original equipment manufacturer) supplier for Bosch, Melitta, Nivona, etc.
Jura lineup includes full-size D, E, S, J, Z, Giga series, compact A and ENA series. Formally, the J series is classified as mid-budget, but its specs, platform, functionality and, unfortunately, the price are premium. Today it includes J9, J6, J8 and newest J10, which was presented at IFA 2024 in Berlin.
To be fair, at last year’s IFA 2023 the company presented J8 Twin with two coffee grinders. But it can be positioned as a premium version of the J8.
Except for the color (Midnight Silver / Piano White / Piano Black for J8 and only Piano Black for J10) both models have the same design, specs, main technologies, dimensions and weight, which are (31,8 × 34,8 × 44,6 см)@10,2/10,4kg.
The platform is also identical:
– 4,3-inch touch screen;
– Professional Aroma Grinder (P.A.G.2+);
– auto milk frother (LatteCrema Hot system with three foam consistency settings);
– 1450 W thermoblock;
– 15 Bar pump;
– capacity of water / beans / coffee grounds container – 1.9 l / 280 g / 16 shots.
The list of settings includes 10 options for coffee strength, 3 for brewing temperature and 3 for hot water temperature.
Cold Extraction Process
In fact, Cold Brew drinks with Cold Extraction Process is the main and only difference. However, support for this technology allowed the developers to expand the number of programs from 31 to 42 of hot and cold specialty coffees.
The new model can prepare, for example, Cold Brew cappuccino, Cold Brew americano, Cold Brew latte macchiato, etc.
Unfortunately, their cost reaches ~ € 300 (J10 vs J8 price ~ € 2,000 vs € 1,700 for Piano Black color).
As known, Cold Brew coffee drinks are preparated with room-temperature soaking of coarse-ground coffee beans in cold water to extract the flavour and aroma. Unfortunately, this time varies from 12 to 24 hours. Several major companies have developed their own technologies for this method, including Jura’s Cold Extraction Process and Delonghi’s Cold Extraction Technology, which reduce this period to just a few minutes. In this mode the coffee machine pulses cold water through coarse coffee grounds at a low frequency under high pressure in line with the espresso method. In fact, the increased pressure and pulse mode compensate for the lower temperature, ensuring efficient extraction. As a result, the very popular Cold Brew drinks with the typical fruity taste are prepared in real time in just a few minutes.
For reference, Cold Brew method was invented in Kyoto, Japan in the seventeenth century.
Main technologies
With the exception of the Cold Extraction Process, the functionality is also the same, including:
– 3D brewing technology-based eighth-generation brewing unit.
This unique technology was first implemented in Z10. Its lower piston has a volumetric surface and a complex injection system of water into a coffee tablet. This nifty engineering solution increases the contact area between the water and the coffee pill. As a result, the water contacts the tablet not in one plane, but in 3D space. Under high pressure, the ‘3D’ water shower almost instantly permeates the entire tablet volume, ensuring efficient coffee extraction even with the help of cold water.
– Sweet Foam function.
It first appeared in Jura J8 and quickly became popular. Foaming milk, it flavors the milk foam using the syrup attachment.
This results in delicately sweetened milk foam with a finely pored texture. Of course, the coffee machine comes with syrup cartridge.
– P.A.G.2+ grinder.
The model uses innovative P.A.G.2+ grinder, which can be adjusted between its work.
In addition, the grinder uses noise-absorbing technology from Formula 1 cars, ensuring virtually silent operation. Moreover, after each cycle, its blades return to its starting position that increases service life;
– Coffee Eye feature.
It uses IR cup sensor, which detects the location of the cup (under the central coffee spout or the cappuccino spout). Depending on the result, the coffee machine displays only coffee or milk-based drinks on the screen. In fact, this option simplifies navigation by optimizing the menu on the screen.
Key features
Of course, the J10 supports all of Jura’s popular technologies, including:
– Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.) – pulse mode of pressing hot water under pressure through a coffee tablet to increase extraction efficiency;
– intelligent preheating – fast heating of the thermoblock to the optimum brewing temperature;
– automatically switches to standby mode 15 minutes after the end of the operating cycle;
– active bean monitoring.
The Jura’s aroma control function provides optimal ground coffee consistency, offering ‘mild’ or ‘intense’ mode for different varieties. As known, a finer grind setting extends the extraction time and coffee strength. For darker roasted beans, a barista will typically choose a coarser grind;
– J.O.E. app support.
The list of convenient innovations also includes the intuitive operating concept and the one-touch milk cleaning system.
The model is TÜV certified and comes with a CLARIS Smart+ water filter. As known, TÜV Certification is a trademark, confirming successful testing of a product or process for safety, quality, and sustainability. Of course, these tests comply with international, regional, and national regulations or standards.
The performance of Jura CLARIS Smart water filter is rightfully considered one of the highest on the market.
Cup height:
– height-adjustable coffee and hot-water spouts – 65 - 111 mm;
– height-adjustable cappuccino spout – 107 - 153 mm.
Preprograms include Americano, Cafe latte, Cappuccino, Cortado, Doppio, Double espresso, Espresso, Espresso macchiato, Flat white, Iced coffee, Large coffee, Latte, Latte macchiato, Lungo, Ristretto, Warm milk and Cold Brew drinks.
A short list of minor cons includes:
– Piano Black color only;
– no cup warmer and user profiles.
Conclusions
Jura J10 has become a successful extension of the J series. For an additional ~€ 300 (J10 vs J8 price ~€ 2,000 vs € 1,700) it offers an expansion of the program list by 11 recipes. In fact, with a price increase of ~15%, Cold Brew coffee drinks extend it by ~30%, which is quite adequate. Of course, many fans of classic coffee are skeptical about exotic recipes with a fruity flavor and are unlikely to appreciate the new capabilities of the J10. But a slight increase in price is unlikely to stop progressives and lovers of experiments. In addition, Cold Brew drinks can hardly be positioned as a special coffee recipe. To a certain extent, they are already a new type of cocktail with the addition of coffee.
In any case, consumers can only welcome the appearance of a new superb coffee machine on the market. The video introduces this model.
